How to Choose a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Malaysia

Prices and promises vary a lot. Here are eight practical checks to run before you commit to a 200-hour teacher training.

A 200-hour yoga teacher training (YTT) is often the first step for people who want to teach, and just as often for people who simply want to deepen their own practice. In Malaysia you will find programmes ranging from a few thousand ringgit to well over RM10,000, delivered in studios, in retreat settings and online. The price tag alone tells you very little. Here is how to compare them properly.

1. Who are the lead trainers, and how long have they taught?

Look for trainers who have taught for many years, not only completed their own training recently. Ask how many hours each trainer personally teaches on your course, and whether guest teachers cover anatomy, philosophy or pregnancy yoga.

2. Is the programme registered or aligned with a recognised standard?

If you plan to teach abroad, or want your certificate recognised by employers and insurers, ask whether the school is a registered yoga school with an international body such as Yoga Alliance, and which standards the curriculum follows. If the answer is vague, treat that as information.

3. How are the 200 hours actually divided?

A solid curriculum splits time across several areas, typically technique and practice, teaching methodology, anatomy and physiology, yoga philosophy and ethics, and a practicum (teaching real students). Ask for the written breakdown and how many of the hours are contact hours with a trainer versus self-study.

4. Will you get supervised teaching practice?

You do not learn to teach by listening to lectures. Good programmes make you teach your classmates early and often, then give specific feedback. Ask how many practice-teaching hours are included and whether you will teach a real public class before graduation.

5. What is the class size?

Twelve to twenty students lets trainers give individual feedback. Forty students means you are mostly watching. Ask for the maximum cohort size, not the average.

6. Does the schedule fit real life?

Full-time month-long immersions are great if you can take leave, but many Malaysians work full-time. Weekend-based formats spread over about three months suit working adults and give your body time to absorb the learning. Check whether sessions are missed-class friendly: can you make up a day, and is it free?

7. What is included, and what is not?

Ask for a full cost list in writing. Does the fee include the training manual, assessments, workbooks, certificate and examination? Are there extra costs for props, books, accommodation or re-takes? Also ask about the payment plan and the refund or deferral policy.

8. What happens after graduation?

The best schools support graduates with mentoring, community classes to practise teaching, and guidance on insurance, pricing your classes and finding studios. Ask to speak to two recent graduates and find out whether they are teaching today.

Red flags: guaranteed jobs, "certified in two weeks", no written curriculum, pressure to pay a deposit today, and no way to meet the trainers before you enrol.

How our 200-hour training works

The Apex Yoga 200-Hour Teacher Training runs over twelve weekends in Mont Kiara, with a hybrid option for students outside the Klang Valley. Cohorts are capped, and every student completes supervised practice-teaching before graduating. See the programme details and fees, or talk to a trainer before you decide. We are happy for you to join a class first.
